I get a hit on my UBERX IPhone and respond then chase down the ride in the Greenville area. I always call ahead as the GPS is always off sometimes by a lot if the person requesting the ride slides their pinned GPS location too far. I am speaking to a woman whose speech is slurred. I verify the correct address and provide the specific color of my car then spot her as I pull up. She is being held up by her boyfriend. I can see her speaking to me as her voice comes through my car speakers. I tell her I am pulling up. “What..hiccup…color is yourrrr….car?” “Burgundy…” then I quickly change that to “purple” thinking the color may not register. “328i BMW” I say slowly. I stop beside her. She is still talking on the phone “Where are you?” as she stares across the street. The sunroof is open. I raise my hand out the sunroof and wave at her. Nothing. Finally her boyfriend says “Oh here he is”. They squeeze and fumble their way into the car. Both of them are XL sizes. Beer fumes fill the car. Finally situated; I get an address from the boy friend who can communicate. We are on our way. I try to strike up a conversation; nothing but one word answers in return with intermittent face sucking sounds and the slight sounds of hands moving clothing around. I fidget. My luck…xl sizes. I switch the air on as the car rear windows are steaming up. I focus on the drive, get onto 75 south and the traffic abruptly stops. I inch along. I continue to fidget; decide to turn off the air and open the sunroof hoping that will cool things off. I glance into my rear view mirror. Their large faces are connected at their mouths and she is driving her tongue into his open mouth. Their hands are still all over each other. I refocus on the road avoiding another abrupt stop. I glance ahead a hundred feet and notice a large stream of smoke. We get closer and there is a silver Lexus SUV turned facing southeast, its front end on fire; flames shooting up ten feet in the air. Everything slows down and becomes surreal. There are car parts everywhere; glass as well. Behind the inflamed SUV is a van with the van door open; a man hovering in shock over a woman who is laying in the middle of Interstate 75. Dead I suspect. There is a car slightly in front of the van turned facing West; the passenger side smashed to the back seat. The fireman, in this case a woman, exchanges glances with me. I see no jaws of life in her hands; her expression forlonged. I suspect she is trying to comprehend that there is no hope for the driver. It seemed, through her facial expression, that she was pleading with me to forgive her. I breathe rapidly, my eyes are tearing up as I realize the magnitude of the impact of the lives lost suspecting a child may have just lost their mother or father. I try to express my despair to the passengers; they barely make an acknowledgement then return to sucking face. I wish I could have gotten all this on camera. It was such a contrast of competing realities; the horrific accident; the two XL’s sucking face in the back and John UBERX trying to take it all in and discern reality from fantasy.
