Pi Ride

Today is Pi Day and Albert Einstein’s birthday.  In honor of this, I will share a short related story on an UBERX ride I experienced several weeks ago.

As I headed down Dallas North Tollway (DNT) towards the largest area of demand for UBERX in DFW, I got a ride request pop up near Lover’s Lane. I quickly plugged in the address then headed to the customer’s home.   As normal, I called ahead and spoke briefly with the gentleman who indicated I could start the trip then they would be out momentarily. As promised, the father/daughter pair exited the house and I assisted them into the back of my ride.  One of the principal reasons for driving is to connect with the passengers, so I started up a very active conversation with the father who explained he owned and managed some facilities for people with Alzheimer’s or severe dementia.   I was taking them to the movie theater, so we chatted more then as we neared the theater, the father shared with me that his twelve year old could recite Pi to ninety digits. After some coaxing, she commenced to quickly rattle them off.  Now I have no way of knowing if any of these numbers are correct, but the young lady would periodically pause back up, correct herself and continue which better assured me she had Pi down to ninety digits.  Naturally I was astonished and that certainly made the ride of the evening if not month.

For those that are interested, Pi to ninety digits can be found here.   It’s a lot of digits as shown below.  More information on Pi can be found here.
