For the past several years I have had to file my taxes by mail. Today I took my annual trip to the Plano Spring Creek FedEx to print, copy then prepare the envelope to file my taxes. As I returned to the copier after retrieving a paper clip, a horrific sound commenced to emanate from an indiscernible location. The sound initially drew my attention to the roof or back of the room. As the sound grew, glass started to fly towards the back of the room causing me to snap my head quickly towards the front of the room. Everything slowed as I drew into focus a Black 4-door E-Series Mercedes coming directly towards me. I started to grab for my Apple Air and folders preparing to dash towards the back of the room when the vehicle came to a stop. My mind and heart were unable to keep up with pace of activity. I gradually drew into focus a woman in the driver’s seat. The hood was covered with shattered glass; fine pieces of glass and dust created a smoke like fog around the room. The front window had a fracture in the glass and a hole but otherwise the Mercedes was unscathed. The airbags had not deployed. The woman patron at the front of the room was still working in front of the machine. Two feet from the car that clearly was out of place in the Plano FedEx business center. The driver opened her door, stepped out and loudly proclaimed, ” I am Fine. Don’t call 911. I am fine. My foot got stuck between the brake and gas. My Ugg boot got stuck. I am so sorry”. We were both frozen in front of our copiers continuing to work as the teenage FedEx employee entered into the main room from the back. Clearly shaken, she made an assessment, returned to the back then muddled something incoherent to someone on the portable phone. The lights shut off; she returned and declared, “We are closed”. The driver called her husband Jim I think was what I had overheard. The driver, clearly annoyed by the lack of movement by the other patron, the teenage clerk, and me, raised her voice and asked, “Is there a rear exit”. I kept typing determined to get these taxes off my plate having spent the entire weekend working on them. The fireman quickly arrived then commenced beating on the back door. I surveyed the room again and noticed a pungent odor had filled the room. Was something burning? Smoke like haze still filled the room. Dust and glass particles creating this effect. The fireman brushed along side me and requested I exit. I quit typing, shut down my computer and exited back to the front to the building. The signage in the front parking space, built to break away if someone hit it, was tossed aside and the Mercedes cleared an easy path through the aluminum frame and glass. I recognized the driver off to the side of the building. She was standing next to the other patron who, along with me, sat reactions for several minutes after the Mercedes plowed through he front of the store. The driver reiterated her sorrow. I asked if everyone was fine. They reassured me they were. She expressed her shock at how calm we both were. ” Neither of you moved. You kept so calm.” She was still shaking. I said I think we were in shock. I expressed how glad I was that no one was hurt. “It was just an accident. It is a miracle that no one was hurt. An angel was looking out for us today.” I spotted a police officer and gave her my number and name in case they needed it later. Earlier, I had gotten the location of another FedEx from the teenage clerk. I returned to my car, rushed over there and finished the work as I increasingly realized just how lucky I was today. I got my refund early; from an angel.
